AI Is Making Ads Look the Same. Here’s How to Make Your Brand Stand Out.
AI made ads faster and cheaper. It also made a lot of them look alike. Here’s how to make sure yours is still unmistakably yours.

Scroll your feed for thirty seconds. A product floating on a pastel gradient. A suspiciously perfect person smiling at a laptop. A headline that could belong to any brand in the category.
Now cover the logo. Whose ad was that?
That’s the quiet problem with advertising in 2026. AI tools make it easy to produce ads at speed, and when everyone feeds similar tools similar prompts, the results start to blur. The UK’s Institute of Practitioners in Advertising put it bluntly in a recent feature: is AI making every brand look the same?
If you want to make your brand stand out, the answer isn’t to ditch AI. It’s to stop letting it decide what you look like.
Why looking different pays
Getting noticed is only half the job. People also need to know it’s you.
Kantar’s ad-testing research found that ads most people find distinctive are 2.3 times more impactful than ads few people find distinctive. And if your ad could pass for a competitor’s, some of your budget is quietly working for them.
What makes a brand recognisable
Marketing scientists call them distinctive brand assets: the colours, shapes, characters, type, sounds and phrases that tell people who’s talking before they read your name. Think of what you’d still recognise with the logo cropped out.
Research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute judges an asset on two things. Fame: lots of people link it to you. Uniqueness: nobody else in your category uses it. One without the other doesn’t do much.
Five ways to make your brand stand out
- Do the logo test. Put your last ten ads next to your three biggest competitors’, then hide the logos. If you can’t tell them apart, your customers can’t either.
- Pick a few assets and commit. One colour, one typeface and one recurring visual idea will beat a fresh look every quarter. Recognition is built by repetition, so give it time.
- Ask customers, not the team. A 2025 study in the Journal of Brand Management found marketers’ judgements of their own brand assets were rarely accurate. They tend to overestimate how famous an asset is and underestimate how unique it is.
- Brief AI with your brand, not a blank prompt. Feed it your colours, type, tone of voice and real product shots. As McCann’s Brandon Kaplan told the IPA: “AI doesn’t erode distinctiveness – accepting its first answer does.” Treat the first output as a draft.
- Show up the same way everywhere. The same cues should carry from a billboard to an Instagram story, your packaging and your event stage. Every consistent touchpoint is another repetition. Every one-off look starts the count again.
The one thing to remember
AI can make a hundred ads before lunch. It can’t make anyone remember you. That part is still your job — and it starts with deciding what only you look like.
